Egg Binding |
| |
Egg binding can happen for a number
of reasons, primarily stress and inadequate egg-laying
sites. Different species of lizard have different
requirements for finding a suitable place to lay
their eggs. If they are unable to do so the female
lizard will hold the eggs inside of her indefinitely.
An area with soft sand is usually the best idea
for an egg laying site. You can either place a
container with sand inside the lizards enclosure
or you can move it to a shoebox or similar container
with only sand inside of it.
It will be harder and harder for the female to
lay her eggs as time progresses and the condition
worsens. Often surgery is the only thing that
can save the life of the lizard which is both
costly and extremely stressful to the lizard.
Unfortunately many lizard care-givers do not notice
egg binding in their lizards until it is far too
late.
